Windows 95 files that may be safely deleted to free disk space
1) Open Windows Explorer:
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Programs' and select 'Windows Explorer'. (The 'Exploring - (<drive>)' window appears, where <drive> is the name of the local hard disk.)
2) Select the file(s) to be deleted:
a) Double-click the folder containing the file(s) from the 'All Folders' list box.
b) Select the file(s) from the 'Contents of <path>' list box, where <path> indicates the drive and folder where the file(s) are stored. (The filenames are highlighted.)
NOTE: To select adjacent files, press and hold SHIFT while selecting files. To select non adjacent files, press and hold CRTL while selecting files.
3) Select the 'Edit' menu and select 'Delete'. (The 'Confirm File Delete' dialog box appears.)
4) Click 'Yes' to delete the file(s).
5) To exit Windows Explorer, select the 'File' menu and select 'Close'.
6) (Optional) To delete the .tmp files:
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Find' and select 'Files or Folders...'. (The 'Find: All Files' dialog box appears.)
c) In the 'Named' drop-down list box, type *.tmp and click 'Find Now'. (The 'Find: All Files' dialog box expands to include the *.tmp files.)
d) Select the 'Edit' menu and select 'Select All'. (The files are highlighted.)
e) Press DELETE. (The 'Confirm Multiple File Delete' dialog box appears.)
f) Click 'Yes'.
g) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Close'.
CAUTION: Before deleting ANY files, make absolutely sure that they are not needed by a specific program or user. Perform a backup of the files to be deleted onto another drive before deleting.
7) (Optional) Repeat steps 6) to delete the following types of files.
.bmp files
.hlp files
.ttf files
.wav files
.mid files
.avi files
.bak files
8) If necessary, empty the Recycle Bin:
a) Double-click the 'Recycle Bin' icon on the Windows desktop.
b) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Empty Recycle Bin'. (The 'Confirm Multiple File Delete' dialog box appears.)
c) Click 'Yes' to delete all files from the Recycle Bin.
d) To exit the Recycle Bin, select the 'File' menu and select 'Close'.
